Apple Season Is Here !!!

October see’s the UK apple season move into full swing.

Crisper, fresher and bursting with flavour.

Put simply, British apples in season are just more. . . Appley?

OK, that’s not a word but, once you take your first bite, it’ll make much more sense.

How to make Traditional Toffee Apples?

8 Apples of you choice

400g Golden caster sugar

1 Teaspoon of vinegar

4 Tablespoons of Golden Syrup

2 – 3 drops of Red food colouring

Place the apples into a bowl of boiling water for 20 seconds to remove any waxy coating. Take them out and dry them, then twist off any stalks.

Push a wooden lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple.

Place the apples on a tray covered with baking parchment., keeping it close to the hob.

Put the sugar in a pan with 100mlof water and put on a medium heat. Cook for around 5 minutes or until the sugar dissolves completely then stir in the vinegar, syrup and food colouring.

If you have a sugar thermometer heat until it reaches 150C or ‘hard crack’ stage. Don’t worry if you don’t have a thermometer, you can test the mixture by dropping a little into a bowl of cold water. It should solidify straight away and when removed , be easy to break.

Working quickly and carefully (because this stuff’s like Lava !!! ) you want to dip and twist each apple into the mixture until evenly covered allowing any excess to drip back into the pan before placing onto the parchment.

Allow to cool completely and enjoy !
